The locus of cantata 138 (1723) is the gospel of the day, Matthew 6: 23-34, on the need to avoid the worry of material cares. The cantata’s text, which is commentary, but not a gloss, on the gospel, includes three verses from an anonymous Nuremberg writer’s 1561 hymn Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz (why do you trouble yourself, my heart).
