Gastown – Vancouver’s Oldest District

The original townsite, after the 1886 fire. Many of the buildings date from the last decade of the 19th and the early decades of the 20th century. The district was the downtown core of the city until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Now an area of shops and restaurants, as well as, slowly if increasingly, residences in old, and some new, commercial buildings, and popular as a tourist destination. Today when I was there I heard exactly one conversation in English, and that was with me and one of the local buskers marking a slow day with his guitar.
