Cecil B. de Mille – Cleopatra (1934)

Cleopatra 1934. Greetings to Caesar from Egypt!

Perfectly silly, and perfectly watchable. Large debt to Shakespeare. Claudette Colbert scantily clad. Extravagant tableaux, ostensibly Egyptian, for the purposes of inebriation, seduction, and political manoeuvre. Cecil B. himself in a rather magnificent trailer, identifying what starts with human desire and rises to immortality; although as a writer and bibliophile I worried that he’d rip the pages of the book he kept riffling through.
