When I had the good fortune to work in New Brunswick for several years, I often drove from St. Stephen, where I was chief administrative officer, to meet with colleagues or politicians in Saint Andrews, Blacks Harbour, St. George, Grand Manan, Woodstock, Fredericton, or Saint John. Often I would listen to Bach’s Passion According to Saint John,  its opening chorus filled with the astringency of the oboes, the sorrow of the strings, and insistence of the bass lines that hold the whole together. It is music of unquenchable conviction and belief, lifting the spirit as I marvelled at the beauty of the New Brunswick landscape and its rivers and bays. The music has no equal.
