Strauss, Richard: Ariadne auf Naxos, Op. 60 – live. Fine, funny, and moving performance by Edmonton’s Opera Nuova at the University of Alberta’s intimate Timms Centre. It had been a number of years since I last saw this performed, and it is interesting intellectually and emotionally how perspective modifies on the pull between the tragic and comedic, between love and isolation, and speech and music.
The small orchestra, inclusive of harmonium, piano, and glockenspiel, somehow managed to get itself shoe-horned into the small orchestra pit. Fine performances in particular from Frédérique Drolet as Zerbinetta and Stephanie Yelovich as Ariadne. Beautiful trio work from the attending spirits. Exceptional work by the four male comedians. Good set. Excellent lighting. Effective stage action.
